The Jane Marwick Show

S1E10: HomeBuilder

Listen Later

About to buy a new house and land package? Before you buy, listen to this. As the federal, state and territory governments look to kick start the economy, grants for new homes are generous and appealing. But is there a downside to all of the taxpayer funded largesse? In WA, new home buyers who meet income criteria for the federal package could receive $45,000 in government assistance. That figure can be as much as $69,440 if the buyer is a first home owner and eligible for the existing $10,000 first home owner grant and stamp duty concessions. Are all builders winners, or will some lose? And applying the economic theory of supply and demand, does it mean that new builds and renovations will be more expensive? Who are the real winners, and what are some of the things new home buyers need to consider before they sign a contract? Jane talks to a disarmingly honest WA builder, Glenn Stannard who says "sometimes it's not the best thing to buy or build ... if you're going to ... make it work for you".
