When we are born we don't have a fully formed identity. God has given us an identity, but throughout our lives we are always discovering it and living into it. Difficult situations are often the fertile ground where we can discover more of our identity and learn to establish our identity in all circumstances.
We'll look at the instance right after Peter revealed who Jesus was, He falls back into his old identity and Jesus speaks to the devil who was influencing Peter when Jesus said He must suffer and be crucified. Peter says this will Never be and Jesus says, "Satan get behind me." Could you imagine how Peter might have felt in that moment.
We'll look at How Jesus responded to Peter and see that His response was firm but full of grace and mercy. God always sees us in our true identity, and speaks to the new identity He has given us! When we enter into relationship with God life then becomes about learning to establish our identity and how we live into and express it to those around us.
We see who Peter became through the mistakes and immaturity in his life and we see the new Peter through what he wrote in 1 & 2 Peter!
Key Scripture:
Matthew 16:21-27
1 Peter 1:6-9
1 Peter 1:12
1 Peter 1:15-17
1 Peter 1:22-23,25
