Ok so Hammer Space first appeared, unnamed as such, back in the golden day of Warner Bro's animations. That makes sense. Totally a Bugs Bunny move. Apparently a source for the actual term is fans of Ranma 1/2 which is cool. I sure enjoyed that manga in middle school for some reason.
