The Jane Marwick Show

S1E28: Around The Traps 3

Listen Later

In a time of COVID, the stories from these hardworking, self-deprecating people on the land are uplifting. There isn't a problem that can't be solved, accompanied by a joke or  a wry anecdote. Jane chats to farmers across WA about the season, their work and their lives. Their zest for life and humour when faced with adversity is inspiring. If you need something to lift your spirits and make you smile, then this is the podcast for you. Julian McGill farms in Bolgart where he is getting ready to host the 6Bs, but in the meantime he’s travelled to south west WA where the ground is sodden, a big contrast with a dry start to winter in the Wheatbelt. Leigh Strange farms in Bruce Rock where his great grandfather pioneered their farm. He talks to Jane about the effect of the big wind storms that hit in May and June, of a devastated town recovering and a community rallying after its only shop was burnt down just as WA locked down to combat COVID19. Raelene Hall from remote Neds Creek Station discusses her passion for education and the battle to save the Schools of the Air when the state government announced their closures just before Christmas in 2017. Tony White has been working at the town’s busy bee as Miling adjusts to life now that the Great Northern Highway Miling Bypass has been completed. Brad Jones who farms in Tammin, has had an early start to deliver wheat to Perth, there are more trees to plant, the Qantas Captain is still helping to spread fertiliser, his kids are enjoying weekend sport and like everyone he is hoping for rain. Sam Burgess has been spreading fertiliser in the hope that Arthur River gets rain soon, he’s endeavouring to mitigate salt problems on his farm, and wondering if Julian would like him to bring a quinoa salad to the 6Bs on Saturday night.
