Too often, the vocabulary and imagery selected for English Language  Learning classes are disconnected from the learners' experiences.  Instead of choosing and showing imagery of items from learners' homes,  communities, and cultures, images from Western cultures are used. By selecting vocabulary that is a part of learners' everyday lives and pairing it with familiar imagery, teachers connect to their background knowledge and create a foundation to build connections from.
