Hello there,
Today Owen Narrates "Lady Audley's Secret" Chapter 2
Written by Mary Elizabeth Braddon
Published in the London Journal 1863
We are glad that you found your way over here to the Victorian Periodical Parade. Welcome to the fourth reading of the Cornhill magazine. My name is Owen and I have been assisting Dr. Kari Nixon by reading the fiction portions of the 1862 bound annual edition. This is a nice collection of literature that connects present day folks to the Victorians of 160 years ago.
This first reading is chapter of the Mary Elizabeth Braddon novel, "Lady Audley's Secret." The second and third readings are of chapter two.
In Chapter 2 we meet George Talboys, and few members of the vessel he is sailing home to England on. He is very impatient to get home to see someone, while another passenger is dreading returning home. This instance shows us that people of every generation were racked with anxiety and worries about the future. Both George and his copassenger are returning home after a time abroad earning money to bring home. Money has also always been a stressor, how can we eat without money? How could we afford our homes without money? Where can we get money. All of these questions are answered in this reading from the Victorian angle. I am excited to narrate something from to those rich, Victorian days gone by. I hope that you all enjoy the next fifteen minutes.
Next episode will likely be an interview between myself and our new co-host Daniel Kasper PhD, as we go over The Strange Case of Dr. Jekyll and Mr Hyde, written by Robert Stevenson.
