  1. What should a coven strive to be?
  1. Family/support system
  • Number of members 13 or below (traditional but not mandatory)
  • A place for train in witchcraft
  • A place to be authentic and express yourself freely
  • Dedicated to the sacred laws of being a witch/rules of conduct (harm none, take responsibility)
  • Don’t encourage sneaking around in order to be part of it

    1. How to know if the coven is for you
    1. Intuition
  • Word of mouth
  • Interview with “leader” & entire coven
  • See if there is an open ritual you can attend
  • Ask questions
  •  

    1. Where did you study and for how long
  • What (if any) type of coven are you (faery, gardenarian, dianic, hellenic, asatru…)
  • How many students have you taught and how many years
  • Cost
  • Confidentiality/ privacy policies
  • What holidays do they celebrate
  • Are you ok with participating in ritual if you aren’t doing it onyour own
  • Ask about rituals and whether the content is comfortable for you or not
  • Do they have an agenda (what are their philosophies)
  • How do they handle internal coven conflict
  • Do they allow minors (under 18) and in what manner (ie parental permission)
  •  

    1. How do you vet a coven?
      1. Ask about dues. Where do the finances go
  • Hierarchies
  • Religious Orientation? (Gardenarian, Dianic, Faery, etc…)
  • Number of active years
  • What is the training for the coven and becoming a HP(S)
  • Get background of HP(S)
  • Talk to coveners
  • Public vs private
  • Keep an eye out for abuse (gaslighting, the only true way, the leader is the ultimate authority and can do no wrong, bullying, high pressure)

  • Posting at local businesses
    1. How to vet a student
    1. What levels of study have they done
  • How far do they want their study to go/what’s their dedication level
  • What are their interests
  • Meet and greet with other convenors to make sure its a good fit
  • What does it mean to be a witch to them
  • What are they hoping to get out of it
