S2 Ep. 15 Breaking Barriers: A Queer Iftar in Melbourne

Listen Later

In this week's episode of All1nclusive Tracy and Bhavna celebrate the diversity within the Muslim community. They give a special shout-out to those in the Queer Muslim community who often face discrimination and marginalization within their faith. Homosexuality is often stigmatized in many religions, and LGBTQI individuals must choose between their sexual identity and religion. Some even face severe punishment, including imprisonment and death. The ladies are showing their support for the Queer Iftar event organized by Abdullah Yahya*, creating a safe space for LGBTQI individuals to celebrate the end of Ramadan. Join Tracy and Bhavna as they discuss how events like this are breaking down barriers and promoting inclusion in one of the world's oldest religions.

In another story, Tracy and Bhavna pick apart the controversy surrounding Cambridge University's attempt at world cuisine. The serving of exotic dishes named after countries like India and Turkey caused uproar amongst some students, who deemed the combinations of ingredients as unauthentic and offensive. Tracy and Bhavna discuss whether this is an example of "wokism" running a muck honouring cultural dishes, or indicative of insensitive microaggressions against marginalized students. Join them as they explore the thin line between cultural respect and offence, and question whether students at Cambridge are simply too oversensitive or have a valid point to make.

In What would YOU do? Tracy and Bhavna delve into the important topic of "othering" - that is, targeting or separating people based on race in a work environment. Wondering what you would say if a coworker suggested that a new colleague of color, was hired to work with minority clients? Bhavna shares her thoughts on how she would address this kind of statement and they reveal what "othering" means in the context of systematic discrimination. Tune in as they explore how such attitudes contribute to inequality and hold back people of color in the workplace, and learn about ways to challenge and overcome othering.
