The earliest recording of The Gower Wassail was made in 1947, featuring Gower folk singer Phil Tanner. The lyrics and tune were then published in A. L. Lloyd’s 1967 catalogue book, Folk Song in England. The song was featured on Steeleye Span’s 1971 album, Ten Man Mop (or Mr. Reservoir Butler Rides Again), sung by Tim Hart, which is perhaps its most notable recording. The band attracted criticism during the 1960’s and 1970’s Folk Revival for their use of electronic instruments in recordings of traditional songs; nonetheless, they succeeded in preserving and popularising a rich folk tradition and presented a fresh take on British folk music that innately reflected the contemporary musical landscape.
