The Imperfect Impulse w/Bree O'Connor

S2 Ep8: Journey v. Destination

Listen Later

Today we are talking about the value of struggle in your work. (And in life)

Listen, nobody loves struggling. But if you can cultivate the mindset that there is something of value here, in all the muck, the challenge, and strain, then you can approach struggle with curiosity and reap the rewards.

When we bypass struggle in the interest of expediency, what do we lose? Ideally, when we choose art, when we choose expression, we also choose the deep questioning and struggle that comes with it. There is something we gain through the process… do we get the same gains when we shortcut the process?

IKEA furniture is a triumph of design- no doubt. But none of us will be handing our IKEA furniture to our great great grandchildren as a family heirloom. It won’t last that long. So be wary of shortcuts to your creative process if you want your work to last- both as a work for the ages and as a work for the betterment of your internal world.

Give it some thought.
