When the Black Death made its way into the Italian Peninsula in 1347, half the population of Italy was lost. And for the estimated 100,000 dead in Venice, most of them met their end on a small island just off the mainland. Poveglia. It became the site of hundreds of mass graves called Plague Pits, and the citizens of Venice claimed the island had become inhabited by ghosts and evil spirits. But the City of Venice thought it would be a good idea to build an Asylum right on top. The story of Poveglia is this, listen to ghost stories.
