He shares how life was before the Taliban arrived, the sweeping changes upon their rise to power, and how he eventually escaped this tyrannical rule.

Hamed provides a context to his people's struggles and bares the humanity that the Taliban robbed from him and his entire country. Hamed was one of the lucky ones. Not only was he one of the few to escape the country after 9/11, he was also afforded the rare opportunity of studying in the UK.

It is here that he experiences the meaning of freedom of religion. Even though his notion of religiosity is tainted by Taliban oppression, Hamed starts to entertain the idea of a higher intelligence.
