I am often asked if you need an events degree to work in events. The short answer is no. The long answer is - everyone who I have talked with that hasn't had formal event coursework says they wish they had it or that they would like to go back and take classes.  It will make life easier and help you excel more, faster. You will learn about resources and procedures you might not have known existed.
