I have observed this paradox countless times—in myself, in my learned friends, and in those great orators whose words have shaped the course of nations. This fear, this reluctance to stand before an assembly and make oneself heard, seems at odds with our social inclinations. And yet, history offers abundant examples of men and women who, despite such trepidation, have mastered the art of public discourse to profound effect. I find myself wondering: what wisdom might we glean from their experiences? What truths might we uncover about the nature of public speaking, which seems simultaneously the most natural and most daunting of human endeavors?
