Dragging themselves out of the chaos from their royal assassination, Verity, Elly and Ariana are in mourning. Reclaiming her title, Princess Verity faces her need to repent for the murders in her past. Elly leaves behind the man she loves to find what remains of her people, long thinking them dead. Ariana struggles with what it means to be both Penny and Anisha, as her mind merges with that of a villager she was unable to save. 

They are joined by new allies, Lenore and Taabi. Lenore, a follower of the Raven Queen, finds herself drawn to helping these lost young women, but holds secrets that may change the meaning of magic. Taabi, a nomad who will do anything to survive, also seeks the secrets of the dead.
