In the 1800s, Ignaz Semmelweiss made a (seemingly-obvious-but-nonetheless) groundbreaking discovery that would go on to save the lives of a whole lot of Nigerians and the rest of the world everyday but especially in the Ebola crisis of 2014.

Like most heroes of the past though, his reward was ill treatment and death.
