On this episode of the podcast, we spoke with Beza Alford.
Beza is earning their BA in Creative Writing, so we talked a lot about their writing process. For Beza, writing is a way to find clarity. Often, Beza explores the fairly conservative perspective that they grew up with as a child, often challenging it in their poetry and journaling.
Beyond writing as a form of clarity, Beza also sees writing as a kind of faith. Beza finds the idea of more formal spirituality appealing, but they’re still searching for a faith that fits.
Another huge aspect of our conversation revolves around gender identity. Beza feels that as a member of the queer community, it isn’t their immediate responsibility to educate others about queer identity, as tons of resources exist online and in history. However, that doesn’t mean Beza is afraid to stand up for the queer community, often welcoming conflict with grace as it arises.
