When determining child support in Michigan, the court looks at the income of the two parents. This includes both active income (such as wages and salaries) and passive income (such as investment income).
*The court does not consider the income of the parents' new spouses when calculating child support. *The court may consider the income of grandparents or other relatives if it becomes the income of one of the parents. *The court may also consider the income of a parent's new spouse if it affects the parent's ability to pay child support. *The court does not consider the income of a child's guardian when calculating child support, unless there is an exceptional situation.
The general rule in Michigan is that child support is based on the income of the two parents, the number of children, and the amount of time the children spend with each parent. (248) 590-6600 Call/Text
