There's an expression that floats around the courtroom. You should divorce better but not bitter. Everybody knows the relationship didn't work out. It's why there's going to be a divorce. You can be embittered about it. Or, you can try to better your position as you move on to a new aspect of your life. Bitterness. Spitefulness. All those negative qualities can lead you down a spiraling path. Takes you in the wrong direction while you're trying to prevail in your divorce. Prioritize healthy communication. Focus on cooperation. You can't win your case by stonewalling and not providing information. You can't win by being disruptive, and by being abusive. It won't help. It won't work. It will frustrate the process. The judge will believe you are not operating in good faith. It's not the lawyers who decide what the settlement agreement will be. It's the lawyer who puts their stamp of approval. Your lawyer will be asking the court for its stamp of approval on an agreement that the spouses have come up with. You spend months antagonizing and abusing the other party. Now you will have a hard time negotiating an agreement with that same party. They will be holding all that abuse against you. There will be resentment. If you're putting out resentment, that's what your getting. Maintain respect. Take your attorney's guidance.
