Waiting periods. What are waiting periods? Some people think that a waiting period is a period you have to endure before you can file a divorce or go to court. Some people think of it as a separation period. Where you have to separate first before you can file a divorce. There are a couple of periods that are relevant. They have been called waiting periods. They are periods that have to pass in order for certain things to happen. When there's a divorce for children there's a six-month waiting period. That does not mean you have to wait six months before you can file your divorce. It means that for divorce with children, the court is going to put the lifecycle of the case and span it over a six-month period. From the time you started the case until the time you're ready to finish, six months have elapsed. The lifecycle of a case without children is much shorter. The waiting period is condensed from six months to sixty days. After sixty days pass you will be invited to finalize your case. The six-month waiting period sometimes can be shortened. It can be waived. There is another waiting period people consider about residency. It is not a waiting period. It is more of a statutory period of eligibility. It is more of a jurisdictional qualification.
