People would want to that if you're in a custody battle, does that mean that you cannot have a girlfriend? You cannot have a boyfriend? The rules don't say that. All statutes are focused on the well-being of the children. You have to be very careful if parents are getting involved in a new relationship. The relationship should not somehow lead to the abuse and neglect of the child. If it does it is a reason to start losing your rights. Just the presence of a significant other with whom you socialize is not going to affect your custody.
The court will look at the overall picture. If your significant other is a drug addict consorting with known felons, the court may have an issue with that. You want to socialize. So will your ex-spouse. It might be appropriate for you to sit down. Talk about the best way to go about the relationship. You can agree not to involve the children. You can agree not to introduce the significant other to the children. The thing is to look at the relationship not from what's good for you. Look at it from the perspective of what's good for the children.
