What do you do once you receive a summons and complaint for divorce. This is how a case starts out. Somebody files a complaint there's a summons issued. And then they are served upon an individual. A bailiff hands it to you. Where do you go from there? Look at them. Read them. Don't spend too much time understanding them. There will be a lot of legalese that will intimidate you rather than enlighten you.  Are there quickly approaching dates. Quickly approaching deadlines. It's going to tell you how soon you're going to contact an attorney. When served local, you will have only 21 days to respond. There are obligations that may need to be met sooner. Failure to meet timelines may compromise your rights. It could limit your ability to participate in the litigation. At Goldman and Associates Law Firm, we prefer to see the papers. We go over it with the client. We tell them what it means and what you need to do. There will be proceedings that are attorney-based and proceedings that are client-based. There are counties conducting Early Intervention Conferences or EIC. Those are for attorneys and clients. After a brief introduction the attorneys are excused. An hour is then spent educating the client on certain things. This includes the inner workings of the Friend of the Court.
