What is the penalty for non-payment of alimony? This is not about people splitting up and someone not paying house bills. We are talking about a court order. It is saying someone is paying someone thousands of dollars a month in alimony. It's called spousal support.  The judge has signed off on it. The court order is in place. Alimony is not paid. It becomes a debt. It is usually seen as a civil matter. Alimony is a court-ordered obligation. It is a quasi-criminal matter. Not paying is a violation of a court order. A person can be prosecuted and jailed for not paying. The court will force you to pay attention. Compel you to start paying. The court's show cause mechanism will kick in. A petition will be filed to schedule a show cause hearing. Maybe you can't pay. Your circumstance has changed. Get a lawyer and respond to the show cause hearing. If you don't take action a bench warrant will be issued. Some form of criminal action will be taken against you.
