Welcome to Max.J Story. This is Max Juan speaking from Taiwan.
歡迎來到 Max.J Story(阮員外說書)。
Happy Thanksgiving day! Actually, Thanksgiving is not a traditional Taiwanese holiday, but I have to thank you for giving me great support. So that I can keep updating new episodes on my Podcast channel. Wish you a wonderful Thanksgiving!
Today, I would like to talk about a fancy concept “Slash”. Although you may hear about this word for years, many people don’t understand its meaning. The term “Slash Youth” comes from English “ Slash ”, which refers to a group of people who are no longer satisfied with “Single Career” and choose the diverse life with multiple occupations and identities.
When these people talk about themselves, they will use slash to indicate different professions. Take me for example, I am a podcaster/sales person/tour guide. This term ”Slash” comes from “ New York Times ” columnist Marci Alboher. The same word was first introduced to China by Susan Kuang, who is also the writer of the book “Slash”《斜槓青年:全球職涯新趨勢,迎接更有價值的多職人生》.
"Slash" not only means a punctuation mark, but a lifestyle. Many people want to become slash youth. Some impressive things about being a slash youth are that they can’t be tied to a single job, they can explore more opportunities by themselves, they can earn more income. With all these benefits, we can conclude that this way of life looks attractive and promising.
In Taiwan, a slash career is associated with creative jobs, such as Writer/Photographer or YouTuber/Podcaster. Actually, slash youth is also popular in traditional careers, like a Blogger/Doctor. In traditional Chinese culture, slash youth may be look as spoiled brats, because our parents and teachers always tell us to focus on one skill and do a stable job.
Let me tell you the truth, the world has become more uncertain and unpredictable, for example, COVID-19 pandemic. In this epidemic time, be a slash youth may be a solution. For example, someone may be an office worker, he can also be a YouTuber or Podcaster after work.
Although he may lose job because of the epidemic, he can develop the skill of filming and digital marketing. Therefore, during the epidemic, he may be able to maintain basic income, which is why I want to introduce this book today.
Now, let's discuss how to be a slash youth. First, ask yourself, do you know what you want? What are your interests or skills? If you don’t have a specific target or proficient skills, you have to think deep and spend time to hone your strengths. Take my story for example, as a Podcaster, it took time to learn the knowledge about making podcast. I learn the skills on the online learning platform “Hahow”, and I also ask teachers for advices.
If you say that your current income is not enough to develop new skills, or that your current goals are not very clear, it doesn’t matter. You can do a paid job to support your own life, and develop your business when you have free time. Practice your new skills, but it requires self-discipline and patience.
Nowadays, youth’s career is becoming shifting. Rather than sticking to a particular job, many youths are now pursuing multiple careers simultaneously. I believe it’s a good way for people to develop talents and potential. Start to accept new ideas, and enjoy new lifestyles. If you want to change the world, first change yourself.
Thank you for listening today. Meet you on the air next time. Bye-bye.
