Mother daughter relationships are not always easy. Moms have advice and knowledge that they want to pass down to their daughters and experiences that they want to protect their daughters from. Daughters may feel like they need to follow in their mother’s footsteps, or they may be craving their independence. Whatever the scenario, mother daughter relationships can be complex and multifaceted.
My own mom and I have been through many different stages of our relationship. I was obsessed with my mom as a young child, and then as I got older, I craved independence. My desire to grow up too fast put a strain on my relationship with my mom during some of my middle school and high school years. In college, we were able to use the separation to find ourselves and ultimately come back together closer than ever. Since I graduated college, my mom and I have become best friends. We talk almost every day, value each other’s opinions, and enjoy doing creative projects together.
Because our relationship has taken a lot of work to get to this place, we wanted to share what we’ve noticed that can put a strain on mother daughter relationships, talk about our relationship’s evolution, and offer some guidance to other mother daughter duos. I am so happy to have my mom, Gail Carney, back on the podcast for the third time!
