This Halloween episode we are joined by Docupoet (and wonderfully South Asian female in general) Raena Shirali, discussing her new book 'Summomings'. Indebted to the docupoetics tradition, 'Summonings' investigates the ongoing practice of witch (“daayan”) hunting in India. These precarious poems explore how antiquated & existing norms surrounding female mysticism in India & America inform each culture’s treatment of women, while also contending with the multi-national and intersectional concerns around identity raised in her debut collection.
We discuss the inspiration behind becoming a docupoet, the practices of Dayaan and Witch Hunting in India and Africa and how this plays on the intersection at a time spirituality and 'witchiness' is a trend in USA and UK.
