This might sound odd, especially when most of us prize honesty, and we're conditioned to think, "Tell the truth!" or "Don't be silly!" 

So why do parents tell kids about Santa Claus? About the Tooth Fairy? Why do science-fiction, Game of Thrones, tales about dragons and Disneyland do so well?

It's because human beings need HOPE. We need it to be inspired, to take action, to keep surviving, and to preserve the species.
