S4E13 - "Pills"

Listen Later

Send a note to Allen & Donna…WELCOME BACK!!
Amphetamines were outlawed in 1970. It was a Tricky Dick move. He made amphetamines a very-illegal Schedule Two drug. No more bottles of "mother's little helper" available over the counter.

By the late 1970s, some intrepid manufacturers of 'diet pills' were concocting concentrated formulations of caffeine, ephedrine and sometimes taurine. It was an attempt to legally create the amphetamine buzz that was so prized by speed-freaks in the '60s.

Hundreds of milligrams of caffeine in a concentrated form will get you buzzing....it might even  help you lose weight. It will ALSO keep you awake for finals. Hold on a minute...why are middle-aged ladies wanting to lose weight also taking H.S. finals?

They aren't. The whole "trucker speed" craze of the '80s was primarily targeted to teens. You could buy all you wanted! They weren't 'real' amphetamines...so what was the harm?

You may be wondering what this has to do with the Mighty 'KRP. Turns out Herb found a new advertiser. He was doing his job! He made a sale! Unfortunately, Herb's new buddy, Dave, is running a "weight loss clinic." He's really slinging legal, but very dangerous, 'pep' pills. They'll help you lose weight. They'll also help you pass out in gym class.

Not a lot of laughs in this one, but it's a great message and well presented by the gang. Throw back a couple of Black Beauties and "FocusIn", fellow babies...it's time for "Pills."

WATCH ALONG DETAILS...
[Want to watch along with us? It's a blast!! We highly recommend the 'Shout Factory' boxed DVD set of the entire WKRP series. For reasons you'll have to listen to in the "Prolog" episode, all streaming versions of the original "WKRP in Cincinnati" have had the original music cues removed. Generic music beds and stings were used in place of the original music for the syndicated version of the series. 'Shout Factory' has been able to restore an estimated 85% of all WKRP music cues to the original "as-aired" content for their DVD release. They've also restored scenes that had been cut to shorten episodes for syndication. The original eps ran 25 minutes. The syndication eps were shortened to 22 minutes. Over 88 episodes that's more than four hours of lost content, including the performance by "Detective" at the end of "Hoodlum Rock." Get the COMPLETE series...get the Shout Factory DVDs. The Shout Factory complete series box has a release date of 2014. All individual seasons of Shout Factory disks were released starting in 2015.]
