This series we’re going to be thinking about 'origins'. The idea of origins is relevant for everyone. Because we all live within a story. And the beginning of a story is the seed from which everything grows. Charles Darwin’s book changed the world precisely because it gave society a new origin story. The origin of species.

The grand opening words of Genesis 1 – in the beginning, God created the heavens and the earth – those words had shaped the West’s worldview for 1800 years.  Darwin's book changed the beginning, and that changed the world.

This season we’ll be looking back at the origin of some really important concepts. The origin of money, the origin of cities, the origin of law. Our understanding of how these things came about will determine what we think of them.

In episode 1 we consider the origin of human beings.
