S5 E37 4 Roses Single Barrel + Liga Privada Anniversario 10

Listen Later

The Four Roses Single Barrel bourbon and the Drew Estate Liga Privada Anniversario 10 cigar remain an excellent bold pairing, with the bourbon’s fruity elegance providing contrast and harmony to the cigar’s intense, pepper-driven power.

Four Roses Single Barrel (OBSV recipe: 60% corn, 35% rye, 5% malted barley; bottled at 100 proof):

•  Visual: Rich amber hue in the glass, with good legs when swirled and a viscous appearance.

•  Nose: Dried spice, pear, cocoa, vanilla, maple syrup; accents of ripe plum, cherries, subtle floral notes, dried raisins, and light leather.

•  Palate: Upfront rye spice leading into honeyed sweetness, peaches or apricot, brown sugar, caramel, light oak, hints of ripe plum and cherries; medium body with smooth, warming delivery and a delicately long finish of lingering spice, fruit, and vanilla.

Drew Estate Liga Privada Anniversario 10 (Connecticut Criollo wrapper, Mexican San Andrés binder, Nicaraguan and Pennsylvania fillers):

•  Visual: Mottled reddish-brown to dark, oily wrapper with beefy veins; distinctive fan-tail (cola de pescado) cap and closed/shaggy foot; dense, well-packed construction.

•  Nose (wrapper and foot): Earthy cedar, dark chocolate, pepper, leather, sweet raisin or hay, musty barnyard, hints of fig or dark fruit.

•  Cold draw: Charred oak, leather, barnyard, anise/cloves, earth, tea, cedar; coffee, musk, sweetness, and subtle vanilla or raisin.

Palate:

•  First third: Bold black pepper and spice (tongue and retrohale), dark bitter chocolate, espresso/coffee, leather, cedar, gritty earth; waves of sharpness with emerging semisweet chocolate, hay, and subtle sweetness.

•  Halfway/second third: Pepper recedes somewhat; creamy cedar, dried tea leaves, peanuts/salted nuts, sawdust, fresh ground coffee, floral hints, maltiness, vanilla, black cherry or plum, earthiness, musk.

•  End/nub: Intensifies with robust Nicaraguan spice/pepper, meaty earth, bold espresso, leather, dark chocolate, lingering raisin/pecan, cedar; firm ash, thick smoke, and strong finish.

This pairing excels as the bourbon’s bright pear/peach/plum fruit and creamy vanilla/maple sweetness soften and balance the cigar’s aggressive black pepper and spice, while shared earthy, leathery, cedar/oak, and cocoa/coffee notes create deep synergy. The rye spice echoes the cigar’s boldness without clashing, and the bourbon’s smooth finish refreshes the palate between draws, letting the cigar’s evolution shine.

In summary, this is a high-octane, layered experience — intense, complex, and highly complementary for full-bodied enthusiasts. I’d score the pairing 9.2 out of 10 for its excellent balance and memorable depth.
