S5 E38 The Dalmore 12 Year Old Sherry Cask Select + Micallef Black Label

Listen Later

What’s up, Sticks-n-Stonez fam? It’s your boy Brent Elrod comin’ at ya with a pairing that’s straight fire. We’re talkin’ a Highland Scotch that’s been kissed by the sherry gods and a full-bodied Nicaraguan maduro that demands respect. This one’s been on my mind for weeks—let’s get into it.

The Spirit: The Dalmore 12 Year Old Sherry Cask Select (43% ABV)
Region: Highland

Maturation: Ex-bourbon base + 2-year finish in Oloroso & Pedro Ximénez sherry casks
Nose: Candied orange peel, dark chocolate, raisin bread, toasted hazelnut, and a touch of fresh saddle leather.

Palate: Velvety and rich—dark chocolate truffle, black cherry, cinnamon bark, gingerbread, and that signature Dalmore orange zest. The sherry is turned all the way up.
Finish: Endless waves of cacao, spiced honey, and a hint of toasted oak that just won’t quit.

The Cigar: Micallef Black Label (6 x 52 Toro)

Origin: Nicaragua – Mexican San Andrés maduro wrapper, Nicaraguan binder & filler

Strength: Full

Body: Bold, chewy, layered

Visuals: That wrapper is jet black, oily, and flawless. Burn was razor sharp, ash was tight and salt-and-pepper grey. Smoked for a solid hour and a half like a champ.

Flavor Breakdown:

•  First Third: Dark chocolate and toasted almond right up front, with a whisper of cedar.

•  Middle: Leather, black pepper, and rich earth take over—maduro depth for days.

•  Final Third: Espresso, mineral notes, and that sweet-savory maduro tang that lingers.
This stick is a flavor monster—rich, complex, and built for big spirits.

The Pairing Experience
Holy. Smokes.

From the very first draw and sip, it was magic. The Micallef’s dark cocoa and leather got wrapped in the Dalmore’s chocolate ganache and dried fruit like a warm blanket. That black pepper spice on the cigar? The cinnamon and ginger in the Scotch tamed it perfectly without killing the edge. Every retrohale brought the earth and maduro tang right into the nutty sherry depth, and that subtle caramel sweetness in the cigar popped like crazy thanks to the PX cask.

The 43% ABV gives the Dalmore the backbone to go toe-to-toe with the cigar’s full body, and they evolve together beautifully—starting sweet and bright, then getting deeper and more intense as the smoke goes on. No clash, just pure harmony. This is what great pairings are made of.

Verdict: 9.7/10 – Absolute banger. One of the strongest sherry-maduro combos I’ve smoked this season. If you love rich, chocolate-heavy cigars and sherried Scotch that punches above its price, this is mandatory. The Dalmore 12 Sherry Cask Select is sitting at $82–$94 right now—go get it.

Y’all know what to do—grab a bottle, grab a Micallef Black, and thank me in the comments. Who else is riding with sherry bombs and maduros? Drop your pairings below!
