Listen Later

Episode 2

We return to Tim Scanlan’s story right as the Civil War is beginning. Still living in Houston, Scanlan had started working in the cotton trade, he married, and his wife Sophia was pregnant when Texas started drafting its male residents to join the Confederate army. Scanlan did not support slavery, and he refused to fight for the Confederacy. Thus, Scanlan flees Texas and lives in Mexico, making quite a bit of money, for several years until the Civil War ends.

After the Civil War, Scanlan returns to Texas and he begins his career in politics. During the Reconstruction years, Scanlan serves in both appointed and elected roles, and he eventually serves 3 terms as Houston’s mayor. Houston is growing at a tremendous rate, and his tenure is not without controversy. Our hosts share the successes and challenges of Scanlan’s political leadership and his aspirations to turn Houston into “the Chicago of the south”!

Tim Scanlan passes away in 1906, just after he retires from his career in public service. Scanlan dies a very wealthy man, however, he dies without a will. What will happen to his fortune after his death? If you're curious, join us next week to find out!
