Many people believe alimony payments automatically end when an ex-spouse remarries, but that's not always the case. This video explains when and how you might be able to terminate or modify alimony in Michigan.
• Alimony may not automatically end upon remarriage unless specifically stated in your divorce judgment. • If your judgment mentions "changes in circumstances," remarriage can be a valid reason to seek termination. • You might need to file a formal motion or petition with the court to modify or end payments. • The judge will consider your ex-spouse's financial need, which may be reduced by their new marriage. • The court has broad power and can either terminate alimony completely or modify the payment amount.
