I love Easter. I love what it represents. I love what it means for us. But 2000 years ago, they didn’t know. They didn’t realize. They couldn’t see. Yet. The Gospel of Matthew provides a unique perspective on the life of Jesus, with a heavy emphasis on the Kingdom of God. Matthew points over and over to the fact that this kingdom was not like any kingdom found on earth. In fact, it was the complete opposite. It was an upside down kingdom.
Matthew 26 is comprised of 75 verses and 10 mini stories about the event leading up to Jesus' death. There are some big events here: the anointing of Jesus at Bethany. the Lord's Supper, Judas' betrayal, Peter's denial. It's easy to get lost with this much material, but as Erin Warren teaches, she helps to focus the attention on one question: How does this passage show Jesus is the fulfillment of the Old Testament? It's a good exercise in taking the purpose of the author and applying it to the passage.
