One of the types of clothing that is most often mentioned in the Bible is sackcloth. Sackcloth was typically made of dark goat hair. It was scratchy and very uncomfortable to wear. In the ancient world sackcloth was worn to make outwardly visible a deep inner anguish such as the mourning of a great loss or to demonstrate repentance from sin.
In Psalm 30:11, the text that we will be studying, David writes, “You have turned for me my mourning into dancing; you have loosed my sackcloth and clothed me with gladness.”
