  • Paychecks and Playchecks: Tom Hegna on Building Retirement Income That Lasts | Tom Hegna

Tom Hegna is a retired U.S. Army Lieutenant Colonel and a former First Vice President at New York Life. He grew up in Minnesota, went into the insurance business, and spent 30 years on the road, about 200 days a year, speaking to audiences about retirement. Today he is a bestselling author and economist, and he describes himself as mostly retired.

In this episode of Safe Money Radio, Tom sits down with host Brett Blake to talk through how savings can turn into a monthly paycheck. Why do so many retirees with plenty of money hold back from spending it? What does the order of your market returns have to do with how long the money lasts? How do income annuities differ from growth annuities, and why is a life insurance company the one that offers them? What belongs in a plan for long-term care? And is it too late to start if you are already in your fifties or sixties?

Tom answers with the energy of someone who has spent decades teaching this, and he says he lives what he teaches. He shares his paychecks and playchecks approach, explains why he calls holding money back a just in case retirement, and says retirement income is not a do-it-yourself project. He also describes what he calls guaranteed lifetime income and why he thinks it deserves a look.

  • 6 Questions to Ask Before You Retire | Steve Dybwad

Steve Dybwad has been licensed for more than 50 years, starting as a teenager. He spent years as a stockbroker before he moved his focus to preserving and distributing money for people near retirement. Today, he works out of Nineveh, Indiana, and he is the original voice of Safe Money Radio out of Muncie.

In this episode of Safe Money Radio, Steve sits down with host Brett Blake to walk through six questions worth sitting with before you retire. What does your current lifestyle actually cost every month? What is the least amount of money it takes to fund that lifestyle for life? Does your plan depend on the market cooperating every year? Who is really paying the fee, you or the insurance company? Are you rearranging the money you already own, or being sold something new? And is it truly too late to build a better plan, or have you just not looked at the numbers yet?

Steve answers each one with the plain-spoken calm of someone who has helped clients through these decisions for decades. He explains the difference between a mountain of money that sits still and rivers of money that pay you every month, and why guaranteed lifetime income rarely shows up in TV ads.

  • What to Ask Before You Buy an Indexed Annuity | Sheryl J. Moore

Sheryl J. Moore joins Brett A. Blake on Safe Money Radio for a walk through what she checks before buying an indexed annuity. Moore tells the story of her own 401(k) turning into a "201(k)" during the dot-com bust, and the conversation with her boss that led her to buy her first indexed annuity at age 29. She explains why the financial strength of the insurance company is her first shopping question, how risk pooling makes guaranteed lifetime income possible, and what to expect from an indexed annuity in real numbers. She also covers how an income rider differs from annuitization, why some firms avoid annuities, and why realistic expectations matter. • You Can't Take it With You: Why Retirees Spend Just 2.1% of Their Savings (with Brett Blake)

Retirement’s biggest money problem may not be running out. It may be dying with the account still mostly intact.

Many retirees don't spend much of their savings during retirement, with 65-year-old married couples typically spending only about 2.1% of their $500,000 in savings annually. Most of their spending, around 80%, comes from predictable sources like Social Security, pensions, and annuities, while funds in retirement accounts are left largely untouched.

This behavior may be driven by psychological factors, such as the comfort of regular checks versus the perceived loss of withdrawing savings. Despite some debate about whether guaranteed income truly changes spending habits or simply reflects the type of savers, both viewpoints agree that retirees tend to underspend and may leave significant assets unused by the end of life.

The underlying issue is not running out of money, but failing to use savings to enhance life experiences.

The most practical question is not “What return can this portfolio earn?” It is “How much of ordinary life is covered by checks that arrive no matter what?” Social Security averages $2,071 a month for retired workers this year.

    The rest is the gap.

A daughter’s final fall choir concert and an 87-year-old father finally taking his adult children to Croatia make the math personal.

    If not now, when?

  • Retirement Real Estate: What Your Zip Code Costs You | Brady Blake

Brady Blake is a Realtor with Keller Williams Realty, LLC. He works with clients relocating to the Bentonville and Northwest Arkansas area. Before real estate, he spent 25 years in corporate roles at Walmart, Red Bull, Ford, and Electronic Arts. He is also the brother of host Brett Blake, a tie Brett names on air.

In this episode of Safe Money Radio, Brady sits down with host Brett Blake to walk through the questions worth answering before you move in retirement. What does your state cost you once you add up income tax, property tax, and sales tax? Does a headline like no income tax hold up when the full bill lands? What changes when you cross a state line but leave your people behind? And how does the 10-question list Brady walks couples through help you and your spouse land on the same page?

Brady answers each with the practical read of someone who has helped couples make this move for years. He makes the case that where you live is part of your retirement paycheck, and that a good move balances the tax math with community, healthcare, and the kind of daily life you want to live. Brett ties the picture back to guaranteed lifetime income as the base that makes your retirement address hold up.

  • Your 401(k) Needs a Retirement Income Plan | Dr. Amanda Barrientez

What happens the day your 401(k) statement stops going up and starts having to fund your life?

That question sits at the center of this week's Safe Money Radio, host Brett A. Blake sits down with Dr. Amanda Barrientez, PhD, RICP®, RSSA®, IBC® Practitioner, founder of Retirement Solutions Financial™ and creator of Retirement Income School™. Dr. Amanda works with pre-retirees on a truth many people learn too late: a savings plan is one thing, a retirement income plan is another.

Together, they walk through why safe money starts as a feeling before it becomes a number, how Required Minimum Distributions may reshape a retiree's tax picture, why sequence-of-returns risk changes the rules after 60, and why a paycheck that covers essentials may matter more than a portfolio balance.

    What you will learn:

Why safe money is a feeling before it is a number

The role a retirement income specialist may play alongside an accumulation advisor

How Roth conversions may reduce future RMD pressure

Why some retirees with millions still worry about running out

What a decumulation plan actually looks like

  • Don't Do Medicare Alone: The Decisions at 65 That Can Follow You for Life | Danielle Roberts

Brett went into this conversation thinking Medicare was something he could figure out on his own. He came out of it thinking nobody approaching 65 should try - alone.

Danielle Roberts co-founded Boomer Benefits and has walked more than 100,000 people through Medicare. She sees the same pattern every year. Someone in good health decides they will deal with it later. Someone picks the plan with the cheapest premium. Someone assumes the Medicare handbook will answer every question. Then two years later, a bill arrives, a specialist drops the network, or a diagnosis makes them ineligible for the coverage they actually need.

The decisions you make when you first become eligible for Medicare can follow you for the rest of your life. This episode walks through what to know before you enroll, why the six-month Medigap window matters, and why working with an independent Medicare broker costs you nothing.

Want to take the next step? Run your own numbers with the free WIYN calculator at brettblake.annuity.com, which takes about three minutes. Ready to talk it through? Book a Retirement Clarity Session with Brett. Not a sales call. Not a slide deck. Your numbers, not ours.

    WHAT YOU'LL LEARN

Why Danielle wishes there were a Medicare class for people at 50 or 60

The decisions at first eligibility that can affect your options for the rest of your life

Why the six-month Medigap window is one of the most important dates in retirement planning

How Part B and Part D late-enrollment penalties are calculated, and how long they last

What Medicare does not cover, including long-term care

How Medicare rules change if you are still working at 65

Why an independent Medicare broker costs you nothing and how they get paid

Why "I'll figure it out later" is one of the more expensive Medicare strategies

  • Annuities 101: Turning Savings Into Lifetime Income | Paul Garofoli

You spent 40 years filling the bucket. Nobody taught you how to turn on the tap.

Paul Garofoli is a licensed insurance professional with 44 years in the business. He is Regional Vice President of Individual Annuities at The Standard, sits on the board of the National Association for Fixed Annuities (NAFA), and earned his RICP® from The American College. A Summa cum Laude, Phi Beta Kappa graduate of the University of Massachusetts, Paul has spent his career doing one job well: explaining what annuities actually do, in language that lands.

In this conversation with host Brett A. Blake on Safe Money Radio, Paul walks through the retirement-income conversation most people never get:

Why an annuity is really longevity insurance, and why the Romans invented one for retired soldiers

The plain-English difference between a MYGA (multi-year guarantee annuity) and a fixed index annuity, and when each one may fit

Why a portfolio balance is a number, and income is what you actually live on

The live-on / leave-on framework: how to sort every dollar you own by purpose before you sort it by product

Polly's Plan: how a 44-year insurance veteran built his own retirement income floor

Peak 65: why the largest wave of 65-year-olds in U.S. history is retiring without a pension behind them

The two words most retirees never hear from anyone in the industry: it is OK to spend your money

  • Why Buy and Hold Could Destroy Your Retirement: And Why the Math Says Don't

You spent 40 years building the mountain. Nobody taught you how to safely take money off it.

Todd Tresidder was one of the early pioneers of quantitative investment management, hand-keying decades of Dow Jones data into an IBM PC to prove that markets could be traded with math. He spent 12 years being paid to test what actually works in the financial markets, ran money in the hedge fund world, and retired financially independent at 35. Today, he does not manage anyone's money. He teaches and hosts the Financial Mentor Podcast and has authored multiple personal-finance books

In this conversation with host Brett Blake on the Safe Money Radio, Todd explains why almost everything retirees are told about volatility gets the math backwards:

Why a 50 percent loss requires a 100 percent gain just to get back to even, and why there is a "death zone" around a 25 to 33 percent draw-down that is very hard to recover from

The 2000 to 2012 problem: the S&P recovered to new highs, but a retiree following the 4% rule was still down more than 50 percent

The volatility tax, the mathematical reason a portfolio earning 8 to 10 percent can only support a 4 percent withdrawal

Why championship teams are never the best offense in the league, and what that says about how you should structure a retirement portfolio

What Todd sees in today's market: 45 years of Fed tailwind, a bond market still 50 percent off its highs, gold running as a fear trade, and the most speculative environment he has seen in 65 years

Why he stopped trading against his own models, even though he beat them 70 to 80 percent of the time

Todd's Expectancy Wealth Planning course is at Financial Mentor.
