Sailor Moon’s Cosmic Power Rewind

This week Usagi’s jealousy over Mamoru and Chibiusa leads her straight to an all-you-can-eat cake buffet, where Esmeraude is cooking up a deliciously evil plan for the Black Moon Clan. Between Usagi’s emotional cake binge, a dessert-themed Droid that feels a little familiar, and Tuxedo Mask delivering some truly sweet advice, there’s plenty of classic Sailor Moon silliness to enjoy. But the real star might be Esmeraude herself, especially that ridiculously over-the-top laugh! We’re talking about her unforgettable introduction, the sugary showdown with the Sailor Guardians, and why this episode was such a fun addition to our Sailor Moon rewatch and series retrospective!

ABOUT SAILOR MOON’S COSMIC POWER REWIND

Sailor Moon’s Cosmic Power Rewind is our episode-by-episode rewatch of the original Sailor Moon anime, from the first transformation all the way through Sailor Stars, with the movies along the way.

Each week, Matt and Maggie revisit the story, compare the Japanese version with the English dubs, talk about the differences, hunt for references, and revisit all the characters, villains, and magical moments we love. And yes, we have plenty to say about the wonderfully weird DiC dub, too.

We’re a married couple who love 90s and 00s nostalgia, good laughs, and geeking out over the stuff we grew up with. Whether Sailor Moon was part of your childhood or you’re discovering it for the first time, come along for the adventure.

Sailor Moon’s Cosmic Power Rewind is part of Hopefully Awesome, where we keep things positive, have fun, and celebrate the stuff we love.

We LOVED this one! Chibiusa’s mysterious connection to the future pulls the Sailor Guardians into her mind, where the ruined Crystal Tokyo, the Black Moon Clan, and her fear for her mother all start coming together in a way that seriously felt like Sailor Moon meets Inception. But the big moment is finally meeting Sailor Pluto, and she instantly made an impression on us. Between the dreamlike trip through Crystal Tokyo, Chibiusa learning to trust Sailor Moon, and all the new questions about the future, this episode made the season feel bigger and more exciting than ever. We’re officially very ready to see where Sailor Pluto and the Crystal Tokyo story take us next.

We’re celebrating the end of Rubeus’ reign and one of our favorite Usagi moments yet! Usagi refuses to give up on her friends, even when Rubeus seems to have every advantage, but watching Sailor Moon and Chibiusa finally work together, with Chibiusa trusting Usagi enough to help bring Rubeus down really makes this episode for us!

About this video: Moon Prism Power, Make Up! Join us as we revisit every episode of the beloved 90s anime Sailor Moon, one week at a time. From the original series to Sailor Moon Sailor Stars, including all the movies, we’re covering it all! Every transformation, attack, and heartfelt moment.

Perfect for Millennials or any Sailor Moon fan, we compare the Japanese version to the DIC dub, explore the anime vs. manga, rank attacks, and hunt for Easter eggs. Hosted by a 90s-loving couple, Sailor Moon Cosmic Power Rewind is a fun, nostalgic podcast filled with laughs and moon magic.

We’re revisiting Sailor Moon R Episode 27 and Chibiusa is testing EVERY ounce of our patience. We really enjoyed this episode, especially as Rubeus makes his desperate move and the Black Moon story starts racing toward its conclusion, but stealing Usagi’s brooch leads to some seriously painful consequences. Mercury, Mars, Jupiter, and Venus put everything on the line to protect Chibiusa, only to be abducted by Rubeus and dragged aboard his UFO while Usagi is left completely helpless. And somehow Mamoru nearly earns a spot right beside Chibiusa on our frustration list after basically letting a child escape out a window. We’re talking about the Guardians’ sacrifice, Usagi’s reaction, Chibiusa’s choices, and why this cliffhanger has us VERY ready to see how the Rubeus arc wraps up.

This one felt HUGE. The penultimate chapter of the Rubeus saga cranks up the intensity almost immediately. Petz and Calaveras come in swinging, Chibi-usa finally discovers that Usagi and the girls are the Sailor Guardians, and suddenly one of the biggest secrets of the season is out in the open. Then there’s Sailor Planet Power! Seeing the Guardians combine their strength against the dimensional tear is exactly the kind of massive magical team-up moment we love from Sailor Moon, and it made the whole episode feel genuinely epic. We’re talking about Rubeus proving just how heartless he really is, the Spectre Sisters reaching an emotional turning point, Chibi-usa learning even more about the Silver Crystal, and why this episode has us ridiculously excited to see how the Rubeus saga wraps up.

We’re giving Ami the spotlight in this episode as we revisit Sailor Moon R Episode 25, “For Friendship: Ami vs. Berthier,” and yeah, we loved this one. Ami and Berthier facing off is such a fun matchup, especially when their water powers go head-to-head and their rivalry carries all the way into a high-stakes game of chess. But what really makes this Sailor Moon R rewatch hit is the heart underneath it all, with Ami refusing to abandon her friends and Koan returning when Berthier needs her most. We may be getting another Sailor Guardian paired against a Spectre Sister, but when it gives us this much Ami goodness, we’re absolutely here for it.

This episode gives Sailor Mars the spotlight she deserves. Rei and Koan’s fire-powered showdown is thrilling, but what really makes the episode work for us is everything it reveals about Rei. She can absolutely be a hothead, pun not intended, but underneath that fire is someone who believes deeply in love, loyalty, and protecting the people she cares about. That becomes even more powerful when Koan loses everything she thought she had with Rubeus. Instead of simply defeating her enemy, Rei sees someone who deserves another chance and fights for Koan to have a future of her own. It’s an exciting Sailor Mars battle, a surprisingly emotional look at Koan, and one of our favorite examples yet of just how layered Rei really is.

We’re revisiting Sailor Moon R 2x23, “Awaken the Sleeping Beauty: Mamoru’s Distress,” an episode where Mamoru continues making the breakup way harder than it needs to be. Our Sailor Moon R rewatch podcast digs into Mamoru’s mysterious nightmares, Usagi’s heartbreak and jealousy, Chibiusa accidentally drawing the attention of the Black Moon Clan, and the race to save Usagi after she’s trapped under a deadly sleeping spell. And then there’s Tuxedo Mask riding in on a motorcycle to wake her with a kiss. Look, we still have MANY questions about Mamoru’s decision-making and his refusal to just talk to somebody, but Tuxedo Mask on that motorcycle? Extremely cool. We’re breaking down the romance, drama, ridiculous misunderstandings, and that surprisingly emotional final moment as our Sailor Moon series retrospective continues deeper into the Black Moon arc.

Our Sailor Moon R rewatch podcast reaches “Protect Chibi-Usa: Clash of the Ten Warriors,” and Chibiusa is seriously winning us over. Watching Usagi and the Sailor Guardians race to protect her from Rubeus and all four Spectre Sisters turns into an incredible magical girl showdown, but it’s the sweeter moments that really got us. Chibiusa finally realizes that Sailor Moon is someone she can trust, while Wiseman discovers the connection between Usagi and Neo-Queen Serenity. We may have already known that Usagi is Chibiusa’s future mom, but seeing that relationship begin to take shape still blew our minds, especially with the mystery surrounding why future Usagi appears to be sick, unconscious, or possibly even dead. This Sailor Moon R episode sets up a much bigger emotional story, and we can’t wait to see how it all plays out.

This episode of Sailor Moon’s Cosmic Power Rewind takes us to the beach for Sailor Moon R 2x21, “The Beach, the Island and a Vacation: The Guardian’s Break,” a banned DiC episode that gives the Sailor Guardians a sunny little break from the usual chaos. We’re talking Rei’s island training, Chibi-Usa’s dinosaur friendship, beach episode silliness, and why this one is fun and breezy even if the whole plesiosaur plot had us rolling our eyes a bit. It’s not a great episode, but it is a very weird, very lighthearted Sailor Moon rewatch podcast hangout, and sometimes that’s enough.
