Saint Raymond of Peñafort (Feast Day - January 7th)

Listen Later

Holy Saints Series
Saint Raymond Peñafort spent much of his life focusing on bringing Jews and Moors to Christ. To equip Catholics for this work he introduced the study of Hebrew and Arabic among Dominicans and persuaded Thomas Aquinas to write his Summa Contra Gentes (Against the Gentiles) as an evangelistic tool. Although not an inquisitor, as an advisor to James I of Aragon he was often consulted regarding questions of law regarding the practices of the Inquisition in the king's domains. Raymond told his general that ten thousand Moors had been baptized through the efforts of the Dominicans.
