What does it mean for “sport to be the school of the cross”? Siobhan Heekin-Canedy, 2014 Olympian of Team Ukraine shares her insight into this phenomenon. We discuss the Olympian spirit, its connection to the Christian-Catholic faith, the Ukrainian Greek Catholic tradition and its impact on Ukrainian national identity, Blessed Olympia Bida, the pursuit for excellence, and the call for all Christians to be ambassadors for Christ and participate in the “Olympic Spirit” of the heart. 

Siobhan Heekin-Canedy is a freelance writer on topics including international affairs, religion, sports, and feminism and a Contributing Editor with Providence. She holds a Master of Arts in Law and Diplomacy from the Fletcher School at Tufts University, as well as a Bachelor of Arts in Liberal Arts from Thomas Aquinas College. From 2008-2014, Siobhan represented Ukraine as an elite-level ice dancer, ultimately competing in the 2014 Winter Olympics. She and her husband Michael are the proud parents of two daughters, Maris Stella and Olympia.
