change us. Jesus spoke these words about 2000 years ago to a large

audience on a hillside, but He meant them to challenge us as well. The

thoughts upend normal thinking on almost every spiritual front, and if

we want to follow Jesus, much of what He represents starts here!

SUNDAY MORNING MESSAGE – Salty Lights (Matthew 5:13-16)

There are some actors who are able to play any character. They have the

ability to morph into any personality or look and can take on a role

with a genius ability to portray whatever the writer and director want.

But most actors specialize in a specific type of character. They are

very good at what they do, but when they try to step out of their zone,

they just can’t pull it off. There is something about them that tethers

them to reality and they just can’t shake it. Maybe they perform out of

their own experiences and are a bit more genuine in their acting. Life,

however, isn’t supposed to be acting. Many people seem to think they

need to put on a mask when they interact with people. But Jesus says

that those who belong to His kingdom MUST live out what they are. He

compares us to salt and light. And then He asks us to be what we are.

The implication is that if we try to avoid the essential parts of what

we are, we will miss out on all the PURPOSE that He has for us. So are

we ready to be salty lights?
