Live From Surf City: Stories From Hell Salvador

Salvadoran Mining, Redux

Listen Later

Like the reboot that no one asked for, metallic mining is once again back on the table in El Salvador. Is this God’s gift to the country, as El Presi tweeted out, or just another example of destruction rebranded as development? Who stands to gain and who to lose in Round II of Gold Mining vs El Salvador?

Episode 5 of LFSC gets into it with Cruz the environmentalist, who grew up around a hotbed of antimining activism in Cabañas, as she talks to us about her worries, frustrations and hopes around what gold mining 2.0 brings to her community. We reflect on the fast money and slow contamination mining leaves behind, as well as on the sharp generations of activists that have been honed in environmental defense throughout the years in El Salvador.
