Verses 1 and 2 present concepts that should be familiar to the Jewish Christians reading the letter. All of these were areas of disagreement between Judaism and Christianity. The reference to “dead works” aligns with other New Testament discussions regarding the Law: simply adhering to rules and rituals does not lead to salvation. The imagery of verses 4 through 8 contrasts advancing with growing faith against stagnating in an immature, unproductive faith.
