What's the buzz? The National Assembly has passed the National Health Insurance Bill. It will now be sent to the NCOP for concurrence. The Bill seeks to give all South Africans access to quality health care as provided for in the Constitution.

The NHI fund is intended to cover all South Africans and legal long-term residents. The Bill makes provision for one pool of health care funding for private and public health care providers.

• The SA Medical Association (SAMA) does not support the NHI Bill in its current form as there are concerns about the provision of healthcare services to patients in the country.
