Sammy Figueroa - Celebrated Percussionist

Listen Later

Sammy is...........ready for some more comedy. Born in the Bronx, New York, he moved to Puerto Rico at 8 years old, to live with his grandparents, after his dad died, a heavy bohemian. Discovering his own love of music, especially percussion, he ended up in music school in Puerto Rico, and as a teenager one day went hotel hunting with his friends, knocking on doors until he got his first gig. At age 21, his band got invited to play at the Piedmont Inn in New York City and live there for 2 months. Falling in love with NYC, Sammy got a job as a "jazz expert" at Sam Goodies, a music department store, and after 3 years, became manager of the jazz department. Content with his role, one day he was invited to tour the world with Herbie Mann, a renown flautist, changing his life and introducing him to all the greatest rock bands in New York and LA. Always one to answer the call, he humorously hung up on Miles Davis three times, in the middle of the morning, in disbelief, before showing up the next day and starting a new chapter, playing with Miles for 3 years, and winning DownBeat Poll awards for best percussionist in the world. After meeting composer Michel Camilo and friend Rachel Faro, Sammie begin producing his own albums, winning a Grammy nomination, for "Sammy Walked In" & "The Magician". Forever learning and growing, he has been running a radio show for WDNA here in Miami for over 17 years, and recently won a grant from the South Arts Jazz Road initiative, to tour nationally with his new project focused on honoring his father. As someone who also cares deeply about healing the earth, Sammy is enjoying his role and his voice, championing fringe science, and renewable energy initiatives, while also never forgetting to rejoice, in his story.
