Given the opioid overdose epidemic, it is important that physicians be more careful when prescribing opioids. As a means of accomplishing this, a San Diego County coroner sent letters out to doctors whose patients died of an overdose. Listen in to this opiate recovery support group as they discuss this intervention with prescribers.

Discussion Guide:

What do you think of sending out a courtesy letter to physicians who prescribed an opioid to a patient who died of overdose?

What are the pros and cons of this courtesy letter?

Should coroners be required to notify a physician who may have been involved in prescribing to someone who died?

Should doctors be required to discuss the risk of addiction from opioids and get a signed consent from the patient prior to getting a prescription?
