The Wisconsin Board of Commissioners of Public Lands agreed to loan the Town of Sanborn in Ashland County $640,000 to help the small community deal with the financial fallout that occurred when a federal appeals court ruling resulted in the removal of tribal residents from its tax rolls. Town Chairman Luis Salas talks with Thursday 8 O’Clock Buzz host Tony Castañeda about the 1854 treaty on which the court based its decision, and gives some background on the town’s history of funding and taxation. The Bad River Band of Lake Superior Chippewa Tribe is owed around $1 million plus interest to satisfy claims brought by about 40 tribal residents, who’ve paid taxes in protest since 2015.
