Saratoga – America’s Turning Point

Listen Later

Episode 11 of Turning Points: History’s Greatest Battles revisits the Battle of Saratoga (1777) — the defining moment of the American Revolution. British General John Burgoyne marched south from Canada with 8,000 troops, planning to split the colonies in two. But his advance through the New York wilderness was slow, and American forces under General Horatio Gates and the fiery Benedict Arnold blocked his path. The first clash at Freeman’s Farm ended indecisively but cost the British dearly. Three weeks later, at Bemis Heights, Burgoyne attacked again — and this time, Arnold’s bold, unauthorized counterattack shattered the British lines. Surrounded, out of supplies, and cut off from reinforcements, Burgoyne surrendered on October 17, 1777, handing over his entire army. The victory at Saratoga transformed the war. It convinced France to formally ally with the American revolutionaries, turning a colonial uprising into a global conflict. Saratoga became the turning point that turned rebellion into independence and forever altered the course of world history.
