On March 14, 1995, Pasig RTC Judge Harriet Demetriou concluded the 16-month trial in the murder case of Eileen Sarmenta and Allan Gomez, convicting Mayor Antonio Sanchez of Calauan, Laguna, and several of his men. The court's decision was widely welcomed for resolving a crime likened to a "plot seemingly hatched in hell" or "a plan of shamelessness hatched in hell." This thought reflected the extreme brutality and cruelty inflicted on the victims. To this day, many still mourn the fate of Sarmenta and Gomez, two scholars and students of UP Los Baños.
