There are so many stories that centre around spiders and everytime I hear of spiders the story that comes to my mind is Charlotte’s Web by E B White written almost 68 years ago. It is a magnificent classic that is the story of a little girl named Fern who lived on a farm, who loved a pig named Wilbur and Wilbur’s friend Charlotte - a beautiful large grey spider who lived with Wilbur in the barn. Charlotte saves Wilbur’s life. The is a beautiful story of magic of childhood on a farm, miracles of changing seasons , life and death and just the glory of every day life and everything about it. In stark contrast we listen to the poem the spider and the fly by Mary Howitt published in 1829. The narrative is about a cunning spider who entraps a little fly into its web by seduction and manipulation and use of flattery. Fathima Narmin if Grade 8 - Al Saad Indian School, Al Ain, renders this dark poem with enchanting voice overs by both the spider and the fly. Listen ....
