Enervate [verb en-er-veyt; adjective ih-nur-vit] verb (used with object), enervated, enervating. 1. to deprive of force or strength; destroy the vigor of; weaken. Synonyms: enfeeble, debilitate, sap, exhaust. adjective 2. Enervated.
“Enervate” comes from the Latin word enervare, which was formed from the prefix e-, meaning “out of,” and “-nervare” (from nervus, meaning “sinew or nerve”). So, etymologically at least, someone who is enervated is “out of nerve.”
